Home, an enjoyable, happy place, where we live, laugh, and learn. Also, it is a place where we feel safe and comfortable.

But during summer, the comfort goes away with the increase of heat. No matter how many fans you have, you always end up feeling overheated and sleepy. To be comfortable throughout the summer, you are going to need a good air conditioner (AC), whether it can be a split or window ac.

Also, an  Air Conditioner (AC) increases your productivity at home during the day and provides a good quality of sleep throughout the night. A good night’s sleep has really good effects on our health, mode, and well-being.

However, when it comes to choosing an Air Conditioner, it is not that easy, like so many models out there with different capacities and features. Therefore, it might confuse you, which Air Conditioner to go for because an Air Conditioner is a long term investment for your comfort and also, it adds value to your home. That’s why to clear your every doubt regarding Air Conditioners, in this article, we will discuss the Top 10 Best Air Conditioners in India keeping in mind which Air Conditioner provides the best value for you along with the proper guide at the end.

Table of content show

Which Type of Air Conditioner (AC) is Right for You? Split or Window.

There are two common and major types of Air Conditioner units are used in India, such as Split and Window Air Conditioner.

When we look at Window AC, these are the best for small size-rooms, and also for the places where you may need to change the location more frequently, such as rented houses or apartments. And for that, a Window is the right choice for you.

On the other hand, Split ACs suit the best for large and more permanent rooms. The installation requires a professional, but these ACs provide high energy efficiency and comfort as compared to window ACs. Also, they are more decent and suit your interior of the room. And for that, a Split AC is the right choice for you.

What Things to Look for in an Air Conditioner (AC)?

As we know, an Air Conditioner is a long-term investment; therefore, it is a must to consider some major things before making a decision, such as Air Conditioner’s Warranty, Star rating, TON Capacity, and Features.

When we look at the warranty nowadays, every Air Conditioner brand offers a 5-10 years warranty on Compressor and 1-year on the product, as Air Conditioners are one of the most expensive appliances. Therefore it is always good to go with the one which offers a long-lasting warranty to avoid conflict with Air Conditioner in the near future.

Star Rating is another factor you should look at because the higher the Star Rating, the greater its efficiency. Therefore always try to go with 4 or 5 Star Rating ACs, although they cost you high, but definitely save you a lot in the long run as compared to 2 or 3 Star Rating ACs.

Next, the Tonnage Capacity or Simply TON, this determines whether an Air Conditioner unit is right for you or not. If you have a small room of size 100 – 200 sq ft, then 1 TON AC unit is sufficient to cool down the room effectively and efficiently while 1.5 TON or 2 TON suits the best for halls of size 600 – 700 sq ft and 900 – 1,000 sq ft respectively. Higher the TON faster will be the cooling and higher will be the electricity bill. So, you must choose according to your need, and along with that, you should also look at whether it is Inverter AC or Non-Inverter AC.

Finally, Features, a high Star Rating, and proper TON Capacity Air Conditioner will do an excellent job of cooling, but when we add good features such as Wifi connectivity, Self Diagnosis, Fast cooling, and many more, they will definitely add extra value to the performance, efficiency and your comfort.

How Did We Pick the Top 10 Best Air Conditioner (AC)?

Picking the Top 10 Best Air Conditioner (AC) was not easy as we had to set certain parameters in term of Technology (Inverter AC: it is much more efficient than any other technology out in the market) Efficiency, Star Rating, TON Capacity, Customers Review, Customers Satisfaction and the most important “Comfort while sleeping.” If we feel comfortable sleeping near an Air Conditioner, then we can say the Air Conditioner will be comfortable during the day as well.

After setting the parameters, we analyzed 50+ different AC units based on the parameters and came up with the best 20 AC units. After that, we checked the detailed product description from their official websites, and for the Customer Reviews, we checked the product page on Amazon and Flipkart. And finally, with 20 Best AC on the list, we took real user experience from people who were already using them for more than a month or two to get a clear picture of all the selected AC units. And also, to answer the most important question, “Is it comfortable to sleep near the selected AC?”.

And after all the detailed analysis, we have come up with the Top 10 Best Air Conditioner (AC) units in India.

Best Air Conditioners (AC) in India – Buying Guide

    Air Conditioner Buying Guide India

What is 1 TON, 1.5 TON, and 2 TON?

1 TON, 1.5 TON, and 2 TON are the different capacities an Air Conditioner comes with. When we look at Air Conditioner TON capacity, it has nothing to do with weight. It is a term that describes the amount of heat an Air Conditioner can remove in one hour from the room. In mathematical terms, One TON is equal to 12,000 BTU (British Thermal Unit. It is the unit of heat). In other words, One TON capacity of an Air Conditioner can remove 12,000 BTU of heat from the air per hour. A Two TON unit can remove 24,000 BTU and so on.

Therefore, the higher the TON capacity, the faster the cooling, and the higher will be the energy consumption.

Now, the question may arise in your mind, what is the Ideal TON capacity for me?

Well, you can get your answer by calculating the BTU of your room.

To calculate the BTU of your room, follow the steps:

Step 1: Calculate the area of your room in Sq. ft

    BTU Calculation Step 1

Step 2: Multiply the calculated area by 20 BTU per Sq. ft

    BTU Calculation Step 2

Step 3: Reduce the calculated BTU by 10% if your room is out of sun reach, or increase the calculated BTU by 10% if your room is in sun reach.

    BTU Calculation Step 3

Step 4: Add 600 BTU per person (except the first two-person) to the calculated BTU.

    BTU Calculation Step 4

Step 5: Add 4,000 BTU if you are installing an AC unit in your Kitchen

    BTU Calculation Step 5

Step 6: Divide the calculated BTU by 12,000. You will get your required TON capacity.

    BTU Calculation Step 6

It is recommended to get 2.0 TON Air Conditioner in case the required TON capacity (1.8 TON) is greater than 1.5 TON and vice versa.

Calculated BTU based on Room Area

    Room AreaApx. Calculated BTURecommend TON
    100 – 200 Sq. ft4,0001 TON
    200 – 300 Sq. ft6,0001 TON

    900 – 1,000 Sq. ft20,0002 TON
    1,000 – 1,200 Sq. ft24,0002 TON

Selecting the right TON capacity Air Conditioner will save you a lot in terms of money and energy, as it will run efficiently, keep your room comfortable, and reduce the monthly electricity bill.

    Split Air Conditioners

    Spit Air Conditioner

These Air Conditioners are typically designed for larger rooms as they have a high cooling capacity. They come with two units; one is the Outdoor (Condenser), and the other is the Indoor unit (Evaporator). In terms of energy, Inverter Split Air Conditioners with higher Star Ratings are highly energy efficient and lower your monthly electricity bill by consuming less electricity. Also, they keep the environment clean by removing different contaminants such as pollen and dust from the indoor air through their filters.

Also, Split Air Conditioners look fantastic and can be our first choice if we are more concerned about interior design.

Installation wise, the Indoor Unit can be mounted at a height on a wall for a faster cooling experience, while we can place the outdoor unit outside, wherever we like. It is always better to keep the outdoor unit out of sun reach

    Window Air Conditioners

    Window Air Conditioner

They work just like Split Air Conditioners, but this time instead of two separate units for Condenser and Evaporator, they come in single units.

The front parts of Window Air Conditioners are used for Evaporator, while the back of them are used for Condenser. They also use Refrigerants to absorb heat from the room and release it outside.

In terms of Efficiency, Window Air Conditioners are less efficient as compared to Split Air Conditioners, as a typical Window Air Conditioner has EER Ratings of about 9 to 12.4, while Split Air Conditioners have EER ratings from 10 to 20. The higher the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio), the more efficient the Air Conditioner is.

Window Air Conditioners are a cost-efficient option for small rooms and apartments, where they can provide enough cooling. However, they are not as quiet as Split Air Conditioners but quieter than they used to be.

    Portable Air Conditioners

    Portable Air Conditioner

As the name suggests, we can move Portable Air Conditioners from one room to another. They work slightly differently as compared to Window and Split Air Conditioners, as they not only remove the heat from the room through an Exhaust Hose (It is used to release the hot air out of the room) but also remove the room’s air, which makes them significantly less efficient. Also, they are louder, especially when they are cooling the room.

Portable Air Conditioners are suitable at places where installing Window or Split Air Conditioners is not possible, and also if you are very strict on your budget but keep in mind, they are louder and consume enormously high power.

    Inverter and Non-Inverter Air Conditioners

Let us clear you first, an Inverter Air Conditioner has nothing to do with home inverters. It is the technology through which Air Conditioners can regulate the speed of their compressor motor. Like when the desired temperature is achieved, instead of shutting the motor off, it lowers down the speed of the motor, making AC cycles (Cooling process) slow, slightly as needed, and continuous, which results in higher efficiency, comfort, durable and quieter experience.

On the other hand, Non-Inverter Air Conditioners run at full speed and shuts off the compressor motor when the desired temperature is achieved, and turn on the motor again when the temperature starts to rise again, making AC cycles (Cooling process) short and frequent results in unnecessary noise, less efficient and uncomfortable performance.

Inverter AC vs Non Inverter AC

Inverter Air Conditioners are more expensive as they provide consistent cooling with less noise and higher energy efficiency compared to Non-Inverter Air Conditioners.

Major Benefits of Inverter Air Conditioners

    • High Energy Efficient – Almost 30-50% more energy-efficient as compared to Non-Inverter
    • More Comfortable – Quieter and more durable than a Non-Inverter
    • Overall a Good Investment – For long terms with great value for money

    Compressors: Rotary and Reciprocating

A Compressor is the heart of your Air Conditioner, which is located in the Outdoor unit.

Evaporator coil of the Indoor unit is filled with Refrigerant in gaseous form, which absorbs the room’s heat and gets pumped to the Condenser coil located in the Outdoor unit to release the heat absorbed by it. But the releasing of the heat won’t happen until and unless the refrigerant is in a higher temperature and pressure form, as heat moves from higher temperature to lower temperature and to achieve this, we need to pass the low-pressure refrigerant through “Compressor,” which rises both the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant. Later this refrigerant passes through the Condenser coil (Outdoor unit), where it releases its heat and get condensed into liquid and travel back to the evaporator coil, where it again gets converted into gaseous form by absorbing the heat, and the cycle starts again, which overall results in cooling the room.

These are basically 5 types of Air Conditioner Compressors:

    • Rotary Compressor
    • Reciprocating Compressor
    • Scroll Compressor
    • Screw Compressor
    • Centrifugal Compressor

Where, Rotary and Reciprocating are the two most common types of compressors used in Air Conditioners nowadays.

    Rotary Compressor

    rotary compressor working

A Rotary Compressor contains two helical rotors that rotate in opposite directions. Refrigerant gas comes into the compressor through the inlet valve, and when the rotors rotate, it increases the pressure of refrigerant gas by reducing its volume. It’s working process makes it quieter, durable, and more reliable as compared to a Reciprocating Compressor.

    Reciprocating Compressor

    Reciprocating Compressor

A Reciprocating Compressor uses a piston to compress the refrigerant gas coming into the compressor through the inlet valve. As the piston moves up and down, it compresses low-pressure refrigerant gas into high, and later the compressed gas is pushed into the condenser through the exhaust valve.

The working process makes them a bit noisier and less durable. It is always advisable to go for a Rotary Compressor Air Conditioner.

BEE Rating: Star Ratings, EER, and ISEER Ratings

    BEE Ratings India

BEE stands for Bureau of Energy Efficiency is an agency of the Government of India under the Ministry of Power. Its main aim is to make the country’s economy energy-efficient and people aware of energy efficiency to make better decisions while buying heavy appliances, such as Air Conditioners and Refrigerators.

    Star Ratings

    Star Ratings Bee

BEE rating deals in Stars, the higher the stars, the higher will be the efficiency. Star Rating ranges from 1 for the least efficient to 5 for the most efficient product, and it is the quickest way to understand the power consumption of any appliance. However, it varies from product to product. Therefore, it’s not fair to compare the Star Ratings of Split Air Conditioners with Window Air Conditioners, as a 5-Star Window AC is not as efficient as a 5-Star Split AC, as we have already discussed that the EER ratings of Window Air Conditioners vary from 9 to 12.4 EER while Split Air Conditioners have EER ranges from 10 to 20 EER. Higher the EER, the more efficient an Air Conditioner is.

    EER and ISEER

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) or commonly Energy Efficiency Rating tells you how much cooling an Air Conditioner unit provides for a given amount of electricity.

    Therefore,

EER Rating = Cooling Output (in BTU) / Total Electricity Input (in Watts)

We can see, higher the EER ratings greater will be the efficiency of cooling devices (Air Conditioners and Refrigerators) for every watt of electricity you provide.

EER Ratings tells you how efficient a device is with a fixed temperature outside, but the temperature across India varies and see an extreme change from season to season, resulting in higher electricity bills, even though the EER rating is high, making EER rating less ideal for Indian conditions. Therefore, BEE has defined a new seasonal EER rating standard called ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)

Now, ISEER Ratings tell you “the ratio of the total annual amount of heat that the unit can remove from the indoor air when operated for cooling in active mode to the total annual amount of energy consumed by the equipment during the same period.”

    Therefore,

ISEER Ratings = Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption (CSEC) / Cooling Seasonal Total Load (CSTL)

The higher the ISEER Ratings, the higher will be the efficiency.

ISEER ratings are made mandatory from 2018 for every Air Conditioner unit. Every Air Conditioner and Refrigerator is assigned with a specific ISEER rating on the BEE label.

Star rating parameters for ISEER are given in the table below (valid from 2nd March 2020 to 31st December 2021)

Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (kWh/kWh)

    Star RatingMinimumMaximum
    1 Star2.703.09
    2 Star3.103.39
    3 Star3.403.69
    4 Star3.703.99
    5 Star>= 4.00

It is always recommended to go with 4-5 Star ratings for better efficiency as a 5 Star Air Conditioner can save roughly up to 28% more energy than a 3-Star Air Conditioner.

    Air Conditioners (AC) Refrigerants

Refrigerant is a coolant either found in a liquid or gaseous state, it absorbs room’s heat and releases it outside by circulating between Evaporator coil (Indoor unit) and Condenser coil (Outdoor unit) through Compressor.

Although there are several refrigerants available in the market, R-32 refrigerant is gaining a lot of popularity as it is 10% more energy-efficient than R-22 and has a remarkably low impact on the environment, making it an environmentally friendly refrigerant.

“R-22 refrigerant is banned in several countries, including India, as it results in the depletion of the Ozone layer.”

Types of Refrigerants and their Impact on Environment

    RefrigerantGlobal Warming PotentialOzone Depletion Potential
    R 2218100.055
    R 410A20880
    R 326750
    R 134A14300
    R 29030
    R 600A30

    How Refrigerants Work?

Without refrigerant, cooling of the room can’t be achieved.

Copper coils present in Air Conditioners are filled with refrigerant. Initially, the refrigerant is in liquid form, and when it absorbs the room’s heat, it gets converted into a low-pressure gas. Later this gas is passed through the Compressor and converted into high temperature and pressure gas, and sent outside in the Condenser coil to release the absorbed heat.

On release, the heated refrigerant cools down and gets condensed into a liquid, and again it returns back to the Evaporator coil where it all started, and ready for another round and it goes on till the desired temperature is achieved.

Monthly Bill After Installing an Air Conditioner (AC)

Before answering the questions, we need to know –

    • How many watts the Air Conditioner consumes in one hour?
    • How many hours per day do you wish to run for your Air Conditioner?
    • What is the rate of electricity per unit in your area or state?

    So, let’s assume

    • It is a Split Air Conditioner of 1.5 TON 5-Star rating, which consumes 1,500 watts per hour.
    • You wish to run your Air Conditioner for 5 hours a day.
    • You live in M.P, where the rate of electricity per unit is 4.05₹

Now let’s do a little Math

Step 1: Convert the watts per hour into kilowatts per hour.

    In our case, it’s 1500 w/h

    1000 w/h = 1 kW/h

    1500 w/h = 1.5 kW/h

Step 2: Calculate kilowatts for the number of hours you wish to run your Air Conditioner.

In our case, it’s 5 hours

    1.5 kW/h X 5 h = 7.5 kW for 5 hours

Step 3(Final): Multiply the electricity rate per unit with the calculated kilowatt.

    In our case, it’s 4.05₹

    For 5 hours it’s 7.5 kW X 4.05₹ = 30.375₹

    And, for a month, it’s 30.375₹ X 30 days = 911.25₹ per month.

On average, you will be paying somewhere around 900 – 1,000₹ per month if you run your Air Conditioner for 5 hours a day.

Note: It may differ slightly according to states as the rate per unit is different state to state, and power consumption depends on various factors as well, such as the location of the area, room color, number of people and furniture present in the room and few more.

Tips for Optimal Cooling and Reduction of Electricity Bill

    Optimal Cooling of Air Conditioner

Having an Air Conditioner is a blessing, but nobody likes an increased monthly bill. Below we have described 10 tips to get the most out of your Air Conditioner with optimal cooling without worrying much about the monthly bill.

    1. Keep the Temperature at 24 degrees C

The average day temperature in cities like Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Bengaluru is somewhere between 34-38 degree C. Keeping the temperature at 24 degrees C is not only going to lower your monthly bill but also comfort you as our body temperature is 36-37 degree C. Therefore, keeping the room temperature below 36 degrees C will naturally make you feel cool.

Also, the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to keep the default temperature at 24 degrees C, before it was 20 degrees C, as studies have shown that for every degree we raise, it saves us 6% of electricity.

    2. Use the Dehumidifier Mode

It is not heat that makes you feel irritated more often, it’s humidity, the moisture present in the air. Using dehumidifier mode will not only make you feel a lot comfortable throughout the hot days but also reduce allergens and irritants present in the air, making breathing easier for people who have asthma.

    3. Use Fan

In case if you are not feeling any overheating, switching on the fan instead of an Air Conditioner will do the job even though they won’t produce as cool air as Air Conditioners but save you a lot in the monthly bill as a typical ceiling fan consume somewhere 90-95 watts per hour whereas Air Conditioners consumer about 1,000 to 3,000 watts per hour depending on the TON capacity.

    4. Use Fan with Air Conditioner

Using a Fan along with Air Conditioner is a more efficient and faster way to spread the cool air throughout the room as fans are better at spreading the air. It is advisable to turn on the fan a few minutes before turning your Air Conditioner on to move away the hot air in advance. It also reduces some work load from your Air Conditioner, making it more efficient.

    5. Get Your Air Conditioner (AC) Serviced Annually

For better efficiency and greater cooling, getting your Air Conditioner serviced annually is a must. Not only will it maintain up to 95% of its original efficiency and performance, but it also reduces the chances of Air Conditioner failure and expensive repair making your Air Conditioner last long.

    6. Keep the Filters Clean

Air conditioner filters need more frequent attention if your Air Conditioner is in constant use, especially during the summer season.

If the filter is dirty, your Air Conditioner has to work harder in order to cool the room but cleaning or replacing the filter once in a month or two, lower down the energy consumption of your Air Conditioner by 5 – 15%.

    7. Only Use When You Needed

You should only turn on your Air Conditioner when the room is in use, although it provides quick relief and comfort when you enter your room and the Air Conditioner is already running, but if you are concerned more about the efficiency, it is better to turn it on only when you enter the room. Also, we can’t deny that Air Conditioners run most efficiently and dehumidify better when they are running at full speed.

    8. Keep the Curtains, Windows and Doors Closed

Your Air Conditioner will have to work harder if the warm air flows into the room and cold air out, so make sure the room is properly insulated in order to maximize the cooling efficiency. It is recommended to keep the windows open in the evening to let the heat escape through them.

    9. Buy the Right Capacity Air Conditioner (AC)

Lower capacity than the requirement of your room can lead to inefficient performance, while higher than the requirement can lead to more than sufficient performance. Both the cases indicate the lack of Buying Guidance and results in the wastage of money, which makes it necessary to know the proper TON capacity you require according to your room size, and we have explained this briefly in the Buying Guide above.

    10. Buy Energy-Efficient Model

As we know, installing an Air Conditioner is a long term investment and choosing high energy efficient Air Conditioner (4 or 5 Star) will definitely lower down your monthly electricity bill, making them an overall a good investment even though they cost you slightly higher compared to 2 or 3 Star rating Air Conditioners.

    3. How Long does it Take to Install a Split Air Conditioner (AC)?

In a word, it hardly takes a few hours.

    Procedure:

    • The technician makes a hole on the wall so that the copper tube can be passed, which connects the Indoor and Outdoor unit.
    • Install the Indoor and Outdoor unit and connects them through the copper tube.
    • Connect the pressure gauge to check Refrigerant gas pressure according to its pressure limit.
    • Install wiring connections.
    • Check copper tube temperature; the compressor outlet should be very hot while the liquid line must be cold at the Outdoor unit.
    • Finally, they satisfy you that everything is working very well.

    It’s time to Enjoy.

    4. Why is there a Fan Mode in Air Conditioner (AC)?

In Fan mode, the AC works just like a normal fan, in which the Compressor is turned off; therefore, the AC does not cool down the room, but maintain some aspect of coolness and make the mode an efficient mode.

We can say this mode is specially designed for people who need Fan even in winters, as it produces a little or no noise at all as compare to normal fans, results in quiet and comfortable sleep.

    5. Is it Good to go for Air Conditioner (AC) with an Aluminium Condenser?

We don’t recommend going for an Aluminium condenser coil, as almost every new AC is coming with a Copper condenser coil, as a result new Air Conditioners are extremely efficient at high heat transfer.

    6. Which types of Air Conditioner (AC) Consumes Less Electricity?

Split Air Conditioner (AC) consumes less electricity as compared to a Window Air Conditioner (AC). Electricity consumption depends on many factors. For instance, if the TON is higher than higher will be power consumption. If the two ACs have the same TON capacity, then the one with a higher Star rating will consume less power, and even if the star rating is also the same, then the one with the Inverter compressor will consume less power.

    7. Which Air Conditioner (AC) Refrigerant Gas is the Best?

R32 refrigerant is the best choice as it is environmentally friendly and efficient as compared to other refrigerants such as R22, R410 A, and several others.

    8. What is Dual Inverter Compressor Technology?

This is a technology that provides double efficiency as compared to single Inverter compressor AC. Which means you will experience more comfortable, faster, and efficient cooling with less noise.

It also reduces your monthly electricity bill as compared to a single Inverter compressor.

    9. Do I Need a Stabilizer for Air Conditioner (AC)?

Most of the Air Conditioners offers Stabilizer free operations and other in-built stabilizers. If either is not the case with your Air Conditioner, then you must need a stabilizer for AC.

    10. Can I Buy a 1.5 TON AC for a 10 X 10 Room instead of 1 TON?

Yes, you can, but you may not need a 1.5 TON for a 10 X 10 room. Yes, a 1.5 TON AC cools down a room much faster as compared to a 1 TON AC but results in higher power consumption, which will increase your monthly bill.

However, if you still wish to go for a 1.5 TON AC, then we recommend you to go for an Adjustable TON Capacity Split AC, in which you can adjust from 1 TON to 1.5 TON, according to your requirement.

    1. “Whenever I buy any electronic appliances, I usually look for the capacity, star rating, and guarantee-warranty. You must do your market or brand research before getting home any of the appliances.

the only thing that people usually neglect is the after-sales service of the brand, which was covered pretty well in this post. LG and Carrier seem to have the best service, and the features and built quality offered also seem to be decent enough compared to others.
      Thank you!!”
